But fabric is where linocut printing becomes something else entirely - wearable, functional, washable, and alive in a way that a framed print on a wall simply is not. A t-shirt you carved and printed yourself. A linen tea towel with a botanical design from your own block. A tote bag that started as a pencil sketch on a Sunday afternoon.
Textile printing with a linocut press is more achievable than most people expect. With the right press, the right ink, and a basic understanding of how fabric behaves differently from paper, you can produce results that look and feel genuinely professional.

Why Textile Printing Is Different from Paper Printing
If you have printed on paper before, you already understand the basics of linocut. The same principles apply to fabric: ink the raised surface of the block, place your material on top, apply pressure, peel back and reveal the print. But fabric introduces three complications that paper does not have.
Fabric moves. Unlike paper, which sits flat and stays still, fabric shifts under pressure. A single small movement mid-print causes a blurred, doubled impression. On paper this is a minor frustration. On a t-shirt you have spent an hour designing and carving for, it ruins the piece.
Fabric absorbs differently. The weave structure of fabric means ink does not spread across the surface the way it does on smooth paper - it sinks into the fibres. This requires more ink, slightly more pressure, and a different approach to ink consistency than paper printing.
Larger formats need even pressure. Hand printing with a baren works beautifully on small blocks and A5 paper. On a 40 x 40 cm block printing onto a t-shirt, the pressure requirements are completely different. Burnishing by hand across that surface produces uneven results almost without exception. A press that distributes force evenly across the entire format is the practical solution.
These are not arguments against textile printing. They are arguments for having the right setup.

Choosing Your Fabric

Best Fabrics for Linocut Textile Printing
- 100% cotton - the most forgiving and widely available choice. Takes ink well, heat-sets reliably, and washes without excessive fading. Ideal for t-shirts, tote bags, and tea towels.
- Linen - beautiful for home textiles: napkins, cushion covers, table runners. Slightly more texture than cotton but still tight enough to give clean results with bold designs. The texture adds character to the print.
- Silk - produces the most refined, vivid prints of any fabric. More demanding to work with (slippery and delicate) but the results justify the effort for decorative pieces.
- Cotton-linen blends - combine the workability of cotton with the texture of linen. A very practical choice for most textile printing projects.
- Canvas and denim - printable, but require more pressure and a slightly thicker ink application. Good for bold, graphic designs. Fine detail gets lost in the weave.
Fabrics to Avoid
- Knits and stretchy fabrics - they distort under pressure and the print distorts with them. Avoid jersey, stretch cotton, and elastane blends.
- Synthetic fabrics - polyester, acrylic, and nylon do not absorb fabric inks well and heat-setting is unreliable. Stick to natural fibres.
- Corduroy, velvet, and textured weaves - the surface variation makes consistent ink transfer almost impossible.
- Unwashed fabric - always pre-wash before printing. New fabric carries sizing and finishing agents that repel ink. A single wash removes them.
Inks for Textile Printing
Standard paper printing inks will wash out of fabric. You need an ink specifically formulated for textile use - one that bonds to fibres and survives the washing machine.
Oil-Based Fabric Inks
Oil-based inks consistently give the sharpest impressions on fabric. They have a longer open time (meaning they stay workable longer before drying), they penetrate the weave without bleeding, and they produce the most opaque, consistent colour. The trade-off is clean-up: oil-based inks require solvent or specialist ink cleaner, not water.

Water-Based Inks - Not Recommended for Textiles
Water-based inks should not be used for textile printing. Despite being widely available and easy to clean up, water-based inks - including those marketed specifically for fabric - wash out of the material. Heat-setting does not reliably fix them: prints fade or disappear after the first few washes. For results that last, always use a proper oil-based fabric ink.
A Note on White Ink on Dark Fabric
White ink on dark fabric is genuinely difficult with block printing. Standard white fabric inks lack the opacity to cover dark ground effectively - results often look grey rather than white. For dark fabrics, consider designing for the ground colour: let the dark fabric be your shadow, and print in a colour that contrasts with it. Alternatively, print on a light-coloured patch that is then applied to the dark garment.
Design Considerations for Fabric Printing
A design that works on paper does not always translate directly to fabric. A few principles help.
Bold Over Fine
Start with bold shapes, strong silhouettes, and generous lines. Very fine carved lines collapse under the pressure needed for fabric printing, and the weave structure of fabric fills in narrow gaps. Designs that rely on delicate detail often look muddy on fabric where they would look crisp on paper.
This is not a limitation - it is a design prompt. The bold, graphic quality of fabric prints is part of their character. Look at traditional block-printed textiles from India, Japan, and West Africa: the aesthetic is defined by clarity of shape, not fineness of line.
Think About Repeat
One of the great strengths of block printing on fabric is the repeat pattern. A single carved block becomes a stamp that can be applied across a length of fabric, building up a pattern through repetition. How to Print on Fabric with a Lino Press: Step by Step
What You Need
- A2 Textile Lino Press
- Carved lino block

- Ink roller (18 cm for large blocks)
- Inking slab (glass, acrylic, or ceramic tile)

Step 1: Prepare Your Fabric
Pre-wash the fabric to remove sizing agents. Iron it completely flat before printing - creases and folds create uneven surfaces that produce uneven impressions. Lay the fabric on the press bed and use the fastening clips or masking tape to hold it taut and flat. Any movement during the impression will blur the print.
If printing on a garment like a t-shirt or tote bag, insert a piece of thick card or folded paper inside the garment. This prevents ink from bleeding through to the back layer, and it gives you a firm, flat surface against which the block can press.
Step 2: Prepare Your Ink
Apply a small amount of textile ink to your inking slab using a palette knife. Roll it out with your ink roller until the layer is even and slightly tacky.
For fabric, the ink layer should be slightly thicker than for paper printing. Fabric absorbs more, so a thin paper-printing ink layer will produce a weak, patchy impression on fabric. You are looking for a consistent, even coat on the roller with a gentle hiss as it moves.
Step 3: Ink Your Block
Roll ink onto the raised surface of your carved block, working in multiple directions to ensure full, even coverage. For large blocks like those used with the A2 press, go over the surface three or four times in different directions.
If this is your first print in a session, prime the block by pressing it once onto a piece of scrap paper first. This priming impression settles the ink into the surface and removes any unevenness from the first roll-out. Your second impression - on the fabric - will be cleaner.
Step 4: Position the Block
Use the laser-engraved centering lines on the A2 press bed to position your block precisely where you want it. If you are printing a repeat pattern, mark the block position with masking tape after your first successful impression and use it as a reference for each subsequent print.
Lay your fabric over the inked block, using the registration lines to centre it correctly. Secure it with the metal fastening clips to prevent any shift during pressing.
Step 5: Press
Place the included printing felt on top of the fabric. The felt cushions the impression, helps ink penetrate the weave evenly, and distributes pressure across the surface. Bring both levers down smoothly and together to apply even pressure across the full printing area.
Hold the pressure for a moment - two to three seconds - before releasing. Do not rock or adjust during the impression. Lift both levers, remove the felt, and carefully peel back the fabric from one corner.
Step 6: Dry and Heat-Set
Lay the printed fabric flat to air dry. Avoid hanging it while wet - the weight can distort the print. Depending on your ink and conditions, drying takes between one and 24 hours.
Once the ink is fully dry, heat-set it to make the print permanent and washable:
- Iron method: Place a clean cloth between the iron and the print. Set the iron to the highest temperature the fabric can tolerate. Press firmly over the printed area for 30 to 60 seconds. This works for most water-based and hybrid inks.
- Tumble dryer method: Dry on high heat for 20 to 30 minutes. Works well for oil-based fabric inks and is gentler on delicate prints.
Do not skip heat-setting, even if your ink manufacturer says it is not required. Heat-setting consistently improves washfastness across all fabric ink types.
Caring for Block-Printed Textiles
Properly heat-set block prints are durable, but a few habits extend their life significantly.
- Wash on a cool or warm cycle, not hot. High heat weakens the ink bond over repeated washes.
- Turn printed garments inside out before washing.
- Avoid harsh detergents. Gentle or delicate cycle detergents are kinder to fabric inks.
- Do not tumble dry on high heat repeatedly. Line dry or low heat when possible.
- Iron prints from the reverse side, or with a pressing cloth between the iron and the print.
Project Ideas: What to Print
Once you have the setup working, the range of textile projects is genuinely wide. Here are some starting points:
- T-shirts - the classic starting point. Bold, centred chest prints work best for first projects. Use 100% cotton for the most reliable results.
- Tote bags - flat, stable, and forgiving. Natural cotton tote bags are an excellent first textile printing surface because they lie flat and are less expensive than garments.
- Tea towels and kitchen linens - linen or cotton, typically a tighter weave. Botanical prints, geometric patterns, and simple typography all look excellent on kitchen linens.
- Napkins and table runners - repeat patterns shine here. A single carved motif repeated across a table runner in two or three colours can look extraordinary.
