Full Product Details

Centering Lines

The A5-sized lino press has carefully laser-cut centering lines on the bottom plate of the press. This means even easier relief printing as you can quickly and easily place your matrix and paper in the absolute center of the plate.

The centering lines include a center cross, and also centering lines for the paper sizes. For relief printing, the lines come in A6 and A4 sizes.

Two Levers for Each Press Size

One lever really wasn’t enough. Now, you can be even more comfortable when relief printing with any size of our linocut presses. Two levers make it easy as can be to apply pressure by simply leaning in with both hands. It’s so smooth that even smaller children can apply the right pressure every time for the printing.

A5-Size Format

The A5 lino press is not only cute. It’s strong! What this press might lack in size, it makes up for in the pressure it can provide for your printmaking. And just like its larger brothers, the A5 remains popular with all of our customers in their reviews and messages. They praise especially how compact and easy it is to handle the A5, while the size also remains popular for woodcut printing, letterpress, plant pressing and similar. Working with this press is extremely easy, and suitable for both professional or beginner linocut printmaking.

Full-Edge Print

For every linocut press, the wooden press plates are larger on the side by 1 cm more than the specific format. Thanks to this, it is extremely simple to insert paper, and it becomes possible to print all the way to the exact edge of the paper. The wooden pressing plates are 230 x 170 mm in size.

Perfectly Stable Pressure

The pressing plates have a total thickness of 48 mm. This guarantees the perfect amount of pressure across the entire printing surface. Meanwhile, the plates also have a cedar paint to match the natural color of the press, and look its best at any location.

Adjustable Tilt

It is also possible to adjust the tilt of the top plate to ensure that it rests evenly on your matrix and paper when applying pressure to the print. Simply loosen the adjustments on the side to adjust the top plate into position, and tighten again to lock in place.

Extremely Durable

Notice that the steel frame of all of our linocut presses is coated in a powder which is extremely resistant, and easy to clean. The construction features 5 mm thick flat steel bars, each extremely durable, while each A5 linocut press has been load-tested at 90 kg without a single bend occurring.

Non-Slip Placement

Also see the rubber strips on the bottom of every press. These offer slip protection, and also protect work surfaces from scratches. It is also possible to securely bolt the lino press to the work surface thanks to pre-drilled holes in the base of the machine.

Free Gift with Every Purchase

Finally, the felt we add to each lino press is free of charge for our customers. We select felt which is both strong, and the ideal thickness for applying pressure across the entire surface of the lino press.

A5 Linocut Press

It arrived perfectly packaged and it's a very portable press. I'm still fighting with the ink consistency and the best paper to use, but I'm happy with the first trial.

Game changer - clear recommendation

I had used barens for about two years before I found this press and since I am not using fine paper (e.g. Awagami) most of the time I had many misprints, which was frustrating. The press changed not only my success rate, it is also very helpful for printing older, uneven blocks perfectly AND it is small enough so I can take it to my workshops. I am actually considering getting a second one because the students like it, too :o)

FAQs

Please read our FAQs page to find out more.

What kind of printing is our portable A5 press suitable for?

Our press is perfect for relief printing, including linocut, woodcut, and other similar techniques. It works excellently on paper, fabric, and a variety of materials, making it highly versatile for different projects. Most of our customers use it for lino printing on various types and weights of paper, with lighter weight paper being ideal for this technique. Recently, printing on t-shirts, bags, and other fabric materials has become increasingly popular. You can even experiment with printing using leaves, plants, and fabrics as matrices, expanding your creative possibilities.

What is the best ink to use for the small hand press?

We highly recommend oil-based inks for use with our linocut printing press. These inks have a thicker consistency, higher opacity, and richer pigment content compared to water-based inks. Water-based inks tend to dry faster, and this can cause the ink to dry on the matrix before it’s printed, which might result in issues. For optimal results, oil-based inks are the best choice for block printing press projects.

What is the maximum thickness of the matrix I can print on the printmaking press?

Our hand printing press is designed to handle materials up to 3 cm thick. This makes it ideal for printing woodcuts, engravings, letters, and various other matrices, providing flexibility for a wide range of projects.

What is the correct order - lino, paper, felt?

In our experience, the most effective order for printing with our relief press is: start with the matrix, followed by placing the paper on top of the matrix, and then the felt over the paper. This ensures that the top plate presses evenly onto the matrix, resulting in a clean and sharp print.

What is the recommended amount of ink for the lino printing press?

For best results, we recommend performing test prints to determine the ideal amount of ink for your lino print press. When using oil-based inks, you can dilute them with turpentine oil for optimal consistency. Hand printing presses typically require more ink than other types of presses, like cylinder presses, so be prepared to use a generous amount of ink for clear, crisp prints.

Can I print small matrices on a larger press?

Absolutely! Our relief press is designed to accommodate both small and large matrices. For smaller matrices, we recommend positioning them in the center of the press. You can even print multiple smaller matrices at once, as long as they are of the same thickness. This allows you to maximize your time and resources when working with different projects on your block printing press.

What can be used to clean the lino press of ink?

To clean the lino press after printing, we suggest using rubbing alcohol or turpentine oil, especially if you’re using oil-based inks. For water-based inks, water or soapy water will suffice to clean the press. Proper cleaning will ensure that your lino printing press stays in great condition and is ready for your next project.

Is the press suitable for dry needle / gravure printing?

Although our relief press can handle smaller formats of dry needle or gravure printing, we recommend it primarily for linocut printing, monotype printing, and similar techniques. With gravure printing, especially on larger formats, the results might not always be as tight as with a press specifically designed for that purpose.
